Ralph's Daily Devotional - Wednesday, May 2

Jude 1:17-19  tells us that the false teachers plaguing the church were "foretold," probably referring to Peter's prophecy in 2 Peter 3:3-7 and Paul's in 2 Timothy 3:1-5.  We see such scoffers in Acts 2:13.

It's likely that the group that was troubling the church did not scoff at God, but rather scoffed at those church leaders trying to deal with their immoral lifestyle.  They refused instruction and discipline, seeking to win the less mature in the church.  As such, Jude states that they were causing "divisions," with people taking sides on whether or not to allow these people to remain.  Jude is adamant, and obviously sees them as evildoers who followed their "ungodly desires...and do not have the Spirit."  Yet many lacked the discernment and maturity to see this.

Spiritual discernment is not all that hard to understand and apply when you read Galatians 5:22-24 and 1 Corinthians 6:9.  Jesus himself said, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God."

No end of people calling themselves Christians seem to have no problem engaging in casual sex and then covering up their guilt with excuses and rationalizations.  It is one thing to fall into a sin, confess it and seek to repent of it.  It is another thing to scoff at the teaching of the Bible and defend your sins as normal and justified.  Where are you?
