Ralph's Daily Devotional - Wednesday, March 7

Matthew 2:11 speaks of another gift called frankincense.  Frankincense is the very aromatic resin that is derived from a particular tree.  There are many other scriptures that refer to this special resin.

Today the best quality comes from Somalia, although the Frankincense that was gifted by the Magi came from Persia or Morocco.  Several tons are still produced yearly today and are used in aromatic health products and perfumes.   Incense made from frankincense is used in Roman Catholic worship.

Frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula for over 5000 years, and served as a special incense during the time of services in the ancient Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.  It represented one of the symbols of God's divine name.  No doubt the Magi, in recognizing the divinity of Jesus, brought their gift of Frankincense as a symbol of their faith.  Their paying homage also indicates this.

The ancient Greek and Roman women of the upper class were well aware of Frankincense and valued it as a perfume.  Frankincense has a very refreshing smell  that is quite unique.  Applying this to ourselves as Christians, let's  strive to give to all who come into our our presence a spirit of refreshment through encouragement, hospitality and love.  You can find Frankincense on various sites.  The better grades are priced upwards of $60.00 an ounce.

Many people still use frankincense today, and in fact Frankenstein considers frankincense his favorite cologne (sorry, I could not help myself).
