Ralph's Daily Devotional - Wednesday, March 28

This morning we begin another act of creation in Genesis, which is that of animals (Genesis 1:25).  Notice first that they are produced after their "own kind."  I think this simply means that God created different kinds of animals.  Despite their great diversity, they were all the product of the same God.

We too are in many ways animals.  Like them, we are flesh and blood, and created from the dust of the Earth.  In fact, the Hebrew word for man ("adama") means "from the dust."  What separates us from animals is that we are also created in the "image" of God (Genesis 1:262:7).

God pronounced the creation of animals as "good."  In other words, they all have a purpose and share with us a vital part of the natural environment and ecosystem.  Do animals have souls?  What about the dinosaurs?  Did animals prey on one another before sin came into the world?  Are animals capable of reason?

I will try to deal with these difficult questions as we move ahead.  But the important lesson to learn here, as more and more of God's magnificent creatures face heartless exploitation and extinction, is that God made them, God loves them, and that they are good.

All Creatures great and small

The Lord God made them all
