Ralph's Daily Devotional - Wednesday, February 14

I don't know about you, but I have learned to be more cautious when making long-term plans.  Someone said, "If you want to make God laugh, tell Him about your future plans!"   But there is a difference between "telling God your future plans" and "talking them over with Him."  Planning the future should be done with a sense of trust in God, plus a good dose of reverence and humility.

We need to have a vision and plan in our lives, both in the short term and long term.  That's why we go to school and prepare for our yet unknown and future careers.  There is nothing wrong with wise planning.

But here in Proverbs 27:1 we have a different situation.  This person is boasting arrogantly.  Luke 12:13-21 gives us a vivid example of such a person.

Only God knows the future.  James must certainly have had Proverbs 27:1 in his thoughts (James 4:13-17).  The opposite of boasting confidently of our future is to live in fear and to constantly worry about it!  Both extremes are wrong.  Surely we cannot go wrong if we adopt the mindset of Proverbs 3:5-6.
