Ralph's Daily Devotional - Tuesday, March 13

Scholars tell us that Matthew 21:18-22 is a story about faith and prayer.  I agree.  But I also think that it's about not having faith.  You see, this tree bore no figs.  In other words, it was useless and did not serve its purpose.  Jesus used this tree as an example of the person who has nothing to offer God.  It's a scary and sobering example that's intended to wake people up to the fact that God will not accept that kind of useless life.

In fact, I believe that it was intended to send a message to Israel.  In rejecting their messiah, they have lost their purpose and as such are useless.  Their whole purpose was to bear fruit for God through Him.  Wow!  However, God still loves Israel and will one day restore her to health.

May we all learn this lesson and seek to honor God by lives that are filled with not just mere words but are fruitful.
