Ralph's Daily Devotional - Thursday, March 29

Do animals have souls?  Perhaps you've never given this much thought, but if you're an animal lover whose beloved pet has died, you no doubt have wondered and hoped that your pet will be with you someday in Heaven.

Many people begin with the wrong question by asking, "Do animals have souls?"  Then they are told by many, "No.  Animals do not have souls."  But Scripture teaches us that all living creatures have souls.  They are all given the "breath of life" (Genesis 7:15).  To have a life is to have a soul.  Man is unique in that he is in the image of God (Genesis 2:7, 1:26).  In other words, we have the potential to live forever with God.

But that potential was destroyed through sin.  God warned man that if he sinned he would die.  Only through the gift of God do we the eternal life we forfeited (John 3:16).  This gift is given to the world!

So what about animals?  I believe they have a place in the new Heaven and Earth.  I also believe that the pets we love will be with us.  The issue and hope should not center on the nature of animals, but on the nature of God who gives to His children the hopes that they desire (Matthew 7:11).
