Ralph's Daily Devotional - Monday, March 5

This series on plants has helped me a great deal, and I hope that it's helping you.  I had never done a study like this before, and hopefully together we can learn and better understand and appreciate the role of plants in the Bible.

Today we consider Isaiah 11:1.  This is yet another prophecy that deals with the messiah Jesus symbolized by plants.  Here it is a trunk, or the main base of a plant or tree.  The trunk of a tree is its strongest point and source of life.  If you've ever had a tree cut down, you know that the trunk is the hardest part to remove since its base roots go far deep into the ground and provide a link to and life with the branches above.

This prophecy speaks of Jesse, the father of King David and of the tribe of Judah.  The Messiah was to be born from this line of Israel's descendants.  The trunk, or stem, is Jesse.  Then it was passed onto David, Israel's greatest human king.  But the branches of this tribe's descendants would later produce an even greater king born not of human flesh, but of God - Jesus the Lord.

God has a loving and incredible plan for us.  He is slowly yet surely working His divine will through history and men to bring forth His goal: to unite all things in Christ (Isaiah 9:6-7).
