Ralph's Daily Devotional - Monday, March 12

Matthew 13:31-33 emphasizes a truth symbolized by the example of the mustard seed.  Mustard seeds are quite tiny, and yet these plants typically reach a height of 8 to 12 feet.  Even birds rest on their tree-like limbs.

Here Jesus emphasizes that the Kingdom of God represented by His church will begin in a way that appears outwardly insignificant, yet in God's time and power will become great indeed.  This theme is also found in Daniel's prophecy (Daniel 4:7-23).

Revelation 7:9-10 is another prophecy regarding the church's phenomenal growth.  Here we see at Christ's return a church that is innumerable; yet, at the time of John's writing this (90AD), there were perhaps only about 200,000 Christians.

All of this reminds us not to judge simply by outward circumstances, nor to despise the little things that we see and do.  Greatness is God's job.  Ours is simply to be faithful.

All creatures great and small
The Lord God made them all!
