Ralph's Daily Devotional - Friday, March 30

A question I am often asked is, "What about dinosaurs?  Are they mentioned in the Bible?  Why and when were they created?"  There is a lot of debate on this topic.  Christians struggle to understand this subject since it also involves questions about the age of the Earth as well as evolution.  I would suggest that all who are interested go to www.biologos.org.

Some believe the Bible mentions dinosaurs.  I don't.  I think any references to strange creatures in Scripture are probably crocodiles, hippos and large sea creatures.  Some Christians believe that dinosaurs were here when man came onto the scene.  Some believe that you cannot be a biblical Christian and believe that the world is ancient and that dinosaurs evolved millions of years ago.  That's simply not so.

The real truth is that we simply don't have all the answers, and that's okay.  Many adamantly believe that the Earth is only about 6000 years old.  They even believe that Noah brought dinosaurs on the ark!  I myself believe that dinosaurs perished 80 million years ago and that the Scriptures are silent on the subject.  This should not pose a problem for us unless we choose to make it one.  What can we say for sure?

Genesis 1 tells us that God created all creatures, including dinosaurs.  How He created them we do not fully understand.  He could have used evolution as His means to do so.  Also, the age of life and the planet may be ancient or possibly recent.  I continue to remain open.  Remember that creation began "in the beginning."  That implies no specific dating period.

From good scientific evidence. it appears that our planet is very old.  The universe appears to be some 5 billions years old.  I have no problem with that.  Do you?  Why?

Finally remember that science is different from scientism.  Science is a wonderful but limited tool for discovery.  We should all believe in science.  Scientism, on the other hand, is a philosophy that is anti-supernatural and dismisses miracles and God, replacing these things with a pure, rational explanation for everything.  That we should reject.
