Ralph's Daily Devotional - Friday, March 23

Wormwood is another herb found in the Bible.  It never has a good reference.  In the Old Testament, it is always associated with a curse and bitterness of spirit.  Used just once in the New Testament, it is found in Revelation 8:10.  Some scholars see this verse as a reference to a spiritual being who curses the Earth in the last moments of history under the Anti-Christ.  I prefer, along with others, to see it as a general description of that period that Jesus mentions in Matthew 24:21.

I find is remarkably interesting that the Ukrainian town of Chernobyl, which has suffered greatly in history, and was also the horrific scene of a nuclear holocaust that still to this day is off limits, has the same name, which translates to wormwood or bitter.  Certainly this city has been a very bitter place indeed, and may serve to all as a type of warning of what the world will experience in its final time prior to the coming of Christ.  In reading the entire chapter of Matthew 24, we can see this.

Thank God  that the bitterness of sin, darkness and death has its defeat in the one who came to destroy it - our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
