Ralph's Daily Devotional - Friday, February 16

We end this brief tour of Proverbs with Proverbs 31:10-31: "A good wife."  The wife in this passage is obviously someone with real savvy, skills and affluence.  She is independent and resourceful.  She lives a life of balance, keeping her family well cared for while finding the time and opportunities to pursue her own interests.  She is not afraid of working with her own hands but can also take charge and show leadership toward others.  She even has good business sense when it comes to purchasing real estate!  No wonder everyone admires her.

This woman exceeds the normal limitations placed upon most women in ancient Israel.  Her husband must be commended for allowing her the opportunity, trust and freedom to reach her full potential - something rare in those days.  He gives her honest appreciation for honest effort.  If more women in the workplace received this kind of respect and these rewards, we would not have the present tensions that we do today.  I suppose one might call this text, "The Women's Liberation of Holy Scripture".

As husbands, do we show this kind of appreciation and affirmation to our lovely wives?  Every situation is different but the application is the same.  We must respect and bless them.  "Love your wives," says St. Paul, if for no other reason than this: who else would put up with us?

I hope you have enjoyed Proverbs!  Next week we begin a new study.
